Aluminum is lighter in weight which would allow you to re-roof your home and reduce the weight on the structure. It is a more pliable material and allows for more detail design in forming. As well it has excellant weatherability characteristics and provides for a long life roof system. Steel used in roofing is metalic coated in either Zinc (G90)or Zinc/Aluminum (AZ50)to provide the corrossion resistance and is stronger by thickness than Aluminum. This strength is incorporated into many of the product designs and gives higher wind uplift resistance and a broader range of application. As a result an installed steel systems has a braoder range of price levels/products. Hope this helps.

We are constructing a new home on a SC barrier island. I am concerned about rust where coated shingles are cut or fastened. Therefore, is it advisable to go with Aluminum? How does the wind resistance compare?

When using steel in a salt environment, check with the roofing manufacturer to see if they have any special warranty requirements. Also, ask them for test data they have showing use of their product in these applications. Quality aluminum roofing systems are designed to withstand windloading through strong panels, proper metal thicknesses, and interlocking designs -- the same as is the case with steel roofing. In your case, I would look for a roof system which has passed the wind and uplift tests required by Dade County. Todd Miller

The Metal Roofing Alliance is a coalition of industry members who are working together to promote the use of metal roofing in residential applications. This includes steel, aluminum, copper, and even other exotic metals. We believe that metal roofing offers superior protection, beauty, and value. One of the best things about metal roofing, I believe, is the wide variety of products. You can choose from a wide variety of product profiles and you can also attain subtly different benefits based upon exactly which product profile, metal, and coating you choose. I feel it is important for consumers to weigh their own situations individually and assess which products is best for them and their house. Of course, there are price differences between products as well. With steel, you have essentially a stronger roof than with aluminum though some aluminum products offer strengthening backers which can be used over the entire roof or just in sections. You have essentially the same coatings to choose form on both metals and you can get long term warranties on both. Steel is available with granular coatings and aluminum is not though. Of course, aluminum, even from cut edges, has no risk of red rust. Today's quality steels offer good rust protection as well. Aluminum, being more malleable, can generally be formed into more intricate and detailed product designs which, of course, build strength into the overall product design. I wish you luck with your decision and I appreciate your consideration of metal roofing. I am sorry I cannot be more definitive in my response but, fact is, I love all metal roofing and think it offers consumers the best value of any roofing type. Todd Miller
