I have an existing roof that is rather damaged. The boarding on the roof is not plywood, it is chip board. Although I have no water damage in my home, I would believe that water has penatrated in the chip board. My question is...Is installing a new roof over the old roof okay? One company has told me to strap over the old and put the steel roof on. The other estimate was to remove all old material, installing new plywood to the entire roof and then laying the metal roof right on top of the new board. No air space between, unlike the first quote which said it would be strapped to the old roof, with I believe he said a 1 1/2" air space. What would be the best option for me? Thank you for any help you are able to provide. Todd Miller

The proper installation method is determined by the metal roofing product you select. That is where it all has to start. Once you select a product, contact the manufacturer of the product to determine proper installation proceedings for your home. As a general rule, if the decking is damaged, it has probably lost its ability to hold fasteners and it should probably be replaced. There are some shake and tile-look metal roof systems which must be installed over battens. Except for those, I believe that most manufacturers of products for residential use suggest installation over solid decking (with underlayment) for residential applications.
