I would like to install Fabral strip metal roofing to my rural cabin. I would like to install over my existing shingles. My home is a 1920 farmhouse, where if you are upstairs you can see all the original 2X6 beems (no attic or insulation). If I choose 1X3 purlines and a 3/4 foam insulation (R4) do I still have to put down an underlayment? Do I need verticle and horizontal purlines? (i'm confused with ventilation - some say keep well ventilated, yet with insulation wouldn't it not allow air flow?) Will the weight be an issue? I have 8:12 pitch and absolutely no soft spots or leaks now, the shingles are curling and I need a new roof.

I believe that fabral requires solid decking beneath the type of panel you're looking at installing. It could possibly be installed over your old shingles with a recovery board or rigid installation board and, yes, underlayment.
You need to contact fabral direct and let them know what panel you're installing and ask for their advice.
