We are a Canadian custom home builder working on a home project for an American client. Our client is from Colorado and has seen a number of homes in their region with a rusted metal roof. They would really like to have this type of roof on their new home in Canada, but we are having a difficult time sourcing enough information about this - ie: building standards/product certification. Having spoken with a couple of steel manufacturers in the U.S. about this corrugated cold rolled steel (not the Cor-ten product), they have informed us that they ship this cold rolled steel to the builders in its raw form so that it oxidizes at a rapid pace. Can you tell me if this type of roofing application has any certification or meets any buiding standards in the U.S.? If we could locate some sort of information about this it may help us source out a Canadian supplier willing to do the same. With the stringent building codes in Canada it is imperative that we have some documentation supporting this type of roofing material.
Any assistance or suggestions you could make would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!

The Metal Construction Association is in the final stages of developing a Certified Metal Roofing Program.
Under this program, products meeting certain requirements in terms of base metal quality can be certified. This is looking for a rustproof metal or for steel that has a G90 galvanized coating or an AZ 50 galvalume coating (if painted) or AZ 55 if unpainted.
Furthermore, the program breaks out "premium' and "standard" divisions based upon the quality of the paint finish or other final coating on the product.
Information on this program is available at www.metalconstruction.org or you can ask your metal roofing supplier if their products meet the MCA Certification Program criteria.

Due to eventual deterioration and also having to deal with run-off from the roof, I cannot suggets doing what you're describing.
Instead, look for a roof with a suitable color and finish which will achieve a similar look without the problems.

I have similar questions to Stephanie's. I am designing and building in the California Mojave Desert - Dry, low humidity, but yes, we do get some rain. I am also interested in using the rusted corrugated metal look for roof as well as siding on some buildings here. We can not afford the corten.
So what is the best to do: get galvinized and etch it (how?), or just get the cold-rolled steel? What gauge is good, so it has some life? What kind of life?
Underlayment: Grace's Ultra underlayment(?)
I need the official ICBO #'s and approval installation specs, where to look for them? I assume we would be using nailing strips.
Would love to vent under the roof, but if the nailers are horizontal, I guess the ridges of the corrugation provides a path. Is there a bug stop/fire stop for the eave (similar to the Cobra vent for the ridge)? What is the best flashing for the ridge? Do they make a corrugated ridge?
Many questions !! HElP!! Thanks
