I have a 12 year old 6:12 metal roof on my house that is is excellent condition and has the factory paint. We want to change the exterior color of our home and paint the roof a compatible color. We have a lot of snow shed off the roof each winter and intense sun (we're at 8000 ft.) all summer. Is our roof a candidate for painting and if so, what is the best paint and primer you can recommend? We will have a painting contractor do the work.

The best paint would be an air-dry Kynar with a quality primer. Sherwin Williams has a primer called ProCryl which I have heard is good.
The air-dry Kynar paint will likely have to be arranged direct with one of the licensees of the Kynar resin such as BASF, Valspar, and Akzo Nobel or you could obtain it through a metal roofing manufacturer.
It is very expensive paint -- probably $300 per gallon.
However, I'll be honest, given your exposure to sun and snow, if you can at all see fit to keep the roof "as is," that is what I'd do. No re-painted finish, even the air-dry Kynar, will perform nearly as well as what you have right now.
