We are interested in installing a metal roof on our home that was built in 1978 and still has the original fiberglass shingles with which we have had no problem. We have received conflicting advice on the correct installation of a metal roof when there is a pre-existing fiberglass roof in place. Can you advise what would be the correct method of installation? Thank you

This will depend upon what type of metal roof you're installing. However, in all events, an inspection of the old roof is necessary to make sure there is no badly rotted decking. Also, an underlayment and perhaps a slip sheet should be installed over the old shingles, depending upon what product you're installing. The decision as to whether battens are necessary is driven solely by what product you're installing.
Once you find some products you like, contact their manufacturers for these types of details.
