We have a 4:12 slope and had architectural shingles installed 8 years ago. It's been nothing but problems. Ventilation & slope was ok per manufacturer's instructions, but we've made all kinds of repairs, installed cable to prevent ice damns and now we are facing replacing the whole roof due to curling shingles. In certain areas, the water falls into the house in buckets during a windy rain storm. We live in WNY.
Metal sounds promising for our situation. The contractor recommends installing the new roof over the old one, but I am concerned about doing this over curling shingles with leaky areas. Since the leaks only happen during windy rain storms, will this still be a problem?
I plan to find out what product the roofer recommends and research that product, and looking into this man's credentials and past jobs, but is there anything else I should be doing? Any advice would be appreciated.
thanks, Janet

You certainly want to make sure that you do not have rotted decking which would cuase problems with fastener pull-out resistance. An experienced contractor should be able to evaluate this.
There are numerous successful installations over old shingles and, provided you choose a product that is heavily formed, such as a "shingle" style product or a heavily corrugated product, the fact that the old shingles are curled should not be a problem.
It sounds like you're taling some good steps. However, you could use this website to find some products you like and then contact their manufacturers for more information. You might want to send manufacturers pictures and even drawings of your roof -- they may be able to help evaluate the reasons for your past problems. It is possible that some additional changes in terms of ventilation or even roof configuration may be a good idea, even with a metal roof covering.
