I am looking into replacing my shingle roof with a metal 5v roof. I have been getting quotes and some are with a batten system and others are not. The batten quote companies say that they are important and the companies that are not recoomending battens say that they are not needed and can lead to oilcanning. Who is right?

Specifications and requirements on this do vary somewhat from manufacturer to manufacturer.
Whenever in doubt or whenever disputes arise such as this, go back to the manufacturer and make sure you are installing their panels according to their specifications.
