I have just inspected the job done on my new metal roof. It is atrocious!. All the valleys are cut uneven and the rake trim is pieced together. Shouldn't this contractor be responsible for removing all the panels and re-cutting the valleys properly? Shouldn't the rake trim be one continuous panel and not pieced together? Also he has cut sections of metal panels and screwed them up against the chimney, etc. to simulate flashing. Isn't flashing a separate type of material?

Judy,
I understand and share your concerns. Just the same, there are several factors here and what my personal beliefs are may not weigh that heavily. The MRA and I really have no influence over the contractual agreement you have with the installer.
First, there is the contract you had with the contractor. Part of his obligation should be to install the roof according to its manufacturer's instructions and specifications. I assume that there was nothing in the contract excusing him from that implied requirement.
Second, you ultimately can make the argument that you personally don't like the look of things and you feel it should be re-done. That may or may not get you anyplace.
I would really suggest tracking down the company that manufactured the panels and bringing them in for their opinion and assistance.
Good luck.

Todd -
Thank you very much for your prompt response. I had thought about doing that very same thing. The contractor told me my warranty would be arriving but the manufacturer but I not received anything. I called and ask him to check on that again and he said he would. I hope to get the information soon and see if I can convince a manuf rep to come out here and inspect. Contractor is being a little stubborn about replacing the panels but I'm convinced that my materials warranty would be void based on the sloppy workmanship.
I do appreciate your response. We do like the metal roof except for all the defects, and I listed only 3 out of 40 we have noted! Thanks again.

I am very sorry but I am not sure what you are asking when you say "what material". As far as how to do valley cuts, that is based upon which product you choose. Most products should be cut with a shearing action though rather than with a saw.

Certainly one option is to field measure the angle and then use a protractor. You can also look at the roof section as a triangle, determine the number of panels it will take to cover the width of the valley and then, by knowing the rafter length and knowing the panels must go from 0" to the rafter length through the progression of that number of panels, you can figure the "progression" of each panel. I would still field verify before cutting though.
