I currently have comp over shake on spaced sheathing and need to reroof. I would like to use metal but am having a hard time eating the cost. However, if metal can be installed without a new deck then I figure I can save a few thousand in OSB costs. Is this possible? And if it's possible is it practical for a DIY?

A couple of things ... provided there are no local code issues and no existing weight problems, some metal roofs could be installed over what you have now with the existing layers of roofing.
However, yes, there are many "structural" metal roofs which could be installed without decking.
Please contact manufacturers of metal roofing products you like direct and inquire with them as to the suitability and applicability of their products for your roof.
As far as DIY, again, it would be best to talk to the manufacturers.
