There are metal roofs that can be installed this way. However, most metal roof manufacturers will advise against it. Metal roofing transmits cold temperatures very well which will put the back side of the metal roof at strong risk of condensation resulting from warm moist air inside the attic and living space. I never recommend residential installations without decking and also underlayment.
I have a 40 year old tile roof which is in a rainy climate but built to "California standards" according to other longtime neighbors. The tiles are laid directly on 1"x4"s without any plywood sheeting so there are air gaps throughout the roof. Am I able to put on a metal roof instead of asphalt without having to put plywood sheeting down?
It would be nice to not have to put plywood down.
Thank you,
Dave
Hey Dave,
Switching to a metal roof without plywood is possible, but there are a few things to keep in mind. Metal roofs usually need a solid surface to fasten properly, and your current setup with tiles on 1"x4"s might need some adjustments. It’s best to have a pro check it out to make sure your roof structure can handle the change and meet local codes.
