I'm needing a new roof and I've been considering going with a metal roof. I have heard that the wood underneath the metal can rot and would need to be replaced later on. Is this true?

Not at all. As with any roof sytem it must be installed correctly and to the building code which calls for ventilation and underlayment with all roof systems. Unfortunately many people instal a metal roof without vetilation and the heat loss condensates under the roof material.
