Hello experts,
I have a tiny off-grid cabin in the mountains outside Seattle. It gets several feet of snow every year and always plenty of rain. As of now, it has a corrugated metal roof that needs replacing. The previous owner simply nailed the panels to the OSB sheathing without any underlayment. Beneath the OSB is R12 insulation and plywood wall paneling.
My plan is to remove the old roof panels, check for any signs of rot and replace the OSB where necessary, then cover the OSB with an ice and water shield, then add furring strips, then the new roof panels. Any problem with this approach? Tips?
Cheers,
Patrick

Do you have a recommendation for insulation above the roof sheathing? Would I simply place it between the furring strips? Thanks for your help!

Patrick,
Sounds like a plan. Might be a time to add some insulation to above the roof deck if you want to heat or cool the space and while Ice/Water full field is nice, it is ultimately unnecessary if the pitch is okay.

Ideally you want a complete thermal brake and some some above deck venting via the cross battens.
Insulation on roof is typically Poly-Iso foam, but any good rigid foam works here. Poly-Iso just has a bit more R-Value per inch as well.
Here is a good thread that is going on talking about this as well: https://www.metalroofing.com/v2/forums/index.cfm?action=mboard.members.viewmessages&ForumTopicID=9207&ForumCategoryID=62&isadmin=1
