I have a 24x30 cabin,a 412 roof.Inside is all vaulted ceiling with 4x6 inch beams, 3ft on center with cedar tung and groove.from the outside it is layerd as followed, asphalt shingles, 30lb felt, 3/4inch plywood, tung and groove & 4x6 beams, no insulation or vents. We have cold winters & I plan to move there in the near future.I want to tear off old felt& shingles, build on top of roof with 2x6 or larger, use high density insulation, vent & replace with a metal roof (verticle style)QUESTIONS:Do I need some sort of felt and/or water and ice? how do I vent it? and do I put on a layer of plywood on(how thick)just befor the new metal roof?Where do I buy the metal roof materials?(cabin is in wisconson) I am in construction, but I am not a roofer, can you give me any addvice to complet my project correctly? Thanks Matt

To some degree, the answers to all of your questions depend upon exactly what type of metal roof you choose. I agree that you need ventilation. This will require some modifications at the eave in order to add a soffit vent as intake. Most metal roof systems will have some sort of ridge vent available for exhaust. You want to allow at least a 1" gap of airspace for ventilation. Most metal roofs will require an underlayment. 30-pound felt is a common choice though, underneath some standing seam roofs, you should use red rosin paper on top of the felt so that the felt and the roofing do not stick to one another in hot weather. There are also many new polymer underlayments available. Building codes in your area might require ice and watershield over the roof perimeter and up the valleys. There are metal roofs which require decking and some which can be installed over battens. The ones requiring decking usually require 1/2". I suggest using this website to find some metal roof products you might like. Contact the manufacturers then and ask about availability, installers, and your other technical questions.
