Installation directly over cedar shingles

My roof on my home is cedar shingles. Replacing the roof with wood shingles is not an option due to current county codes. My question is can metal roof be installed directly over existing wood shingles?

Hi Sam, Thanks for your question about metal roofs. I believe the IBC model code, in section 15010.3.2, prohibits reroofing over wood shake. I agree with Eric that the existing wood shingles should be torn off. Regards, David

Sam, It can if the roof is strapped via purlins or battens but it is usually advisable to just tear off the old roof. A full tear off will allow you the ability to address the flashings, sheathing, and other critical details on the roof. Does the roof have a solid deck or is it skip sheathing style?
