We had a builder give us an estimate on a new roof for our cottage . He takes off old shingles (2 layers) before installing metal roof.or shingled roof. He is telling us that the cost is almost the same to go metal over shingles as the extra cost of the metal is a wash because shingles require more labor. This doesn't seem right, to us. What should I look out for and what questions should we ask?

You really want to know about the quality of metal roof he is selling you. How is it fastened? What type of coating is on it? What type of metal is it? How thick is the metal? Who provides the materials warranty? What is the materials warranty? Those are all good questions to consider.

You can throw down and cheap R-panel for near asphalt but I am not sure it is much, if at all, of an upgrade at that point.
