When I added on to our house 2 years ago the pitch of our addition was too low for shingles, so the contractor installed a rubber membrane. Since then I've had to repair the roof a number of times due to punctures from branches. I'm thinking of having a metal roof installed - would the old rubber membrane need to be removed, or would it serve as an water membrane?
Thanks,
Karl.

Provided that you choose a system that can mount on strapping such that you get a stand off for ventilation and good fastening you should be fine. The new building code mandates a minimum of 1" vented air space over the insulation and under the roof covering.

The rubber membrane covers traditional plywood sheathing with a vented air space below (and above the insulation). The roof is constructed with 2x8 ceiling joists. From what you are saying, it sounds OK to install directly over the rubber membrane. The pitch of the roof is a about 1.25:12
