I live on a golf course and wayward golf balls have done serious damage to my clay tile roof. Would metal be a better choice?

I think metal would be a very good choice. You can get a look that is similar to your tile if that is what you want but it will not crack or break if it hit by wayward golf balls.

I would also consider planting of some trees at strategic angles to avoid the Shankopatamus.
Metal may still ding but it won't be structurally compromised at that point and allow water infiltration.
