I've been following this forum for several months now, just having had a standing seam roof installed on my house. Actually, it was the second metal roof I had installed in the last two years, the first being metal shingles that was a total disaster. After several contacts from my lawyer and his roofing supplier the original contractor finally agreed to make it right by installing the standing seam roof.
He supplied the material, but hired a young man to do the installation and I was very pleased with his workmanship, his knowledge of standing seam and his work ethic. We hit off and actually discussed forming a metal roofing company, whereby I would provide the financing and business/marketing end of it and he would be in charge of the operations. We would roll and form everything in-house.
We're pretty confident in the market since the nearest "serious" standing seam roofing installer is 40 miles away. We live in a relatively small town, but it's a vacation area with many upscale second homes. A large local building contractor has told us they'd be happy to entertain a local standing seam option (no commitment of course).
Nationwide, metal roofing seems to be one of the bright spots in the housing trades, but what do the experts think? Thanks.

Tom,
Yours is an interesting story.
Residential metal roofing, driven in no small part by the Metal Roofing Alliance, has been on a good growth curve for several years and has weathered the tough economy well.
We feel the future bodes well for it. It is likely that as new home construction stays soft, residential remodeling, especially of higher end homes, will be strong. This is a great market for metal roofing. Also, in general in any given year, about 75 - 80% of all residential roofing is for re-roofing not new construction.
Align yourself with a good manufacturer or two and also the MRA. Take advantage of the training that is available for sales and installation.
