My home is 40 years old. The roof was originally a "rock roof"; rolled asphalt sheet, tar followed by 1/4 inch rock and a scattering of larger rock. Is a metal roof lighter in weight than the above described roof system? Bill Rich

Metal roofing will weigh between 40 and 135 pounds per "square" typically. A "square" is 100 square feet. I would estimate that your current roof system is in excess of 250 pounds per square but, obviously, I have no way of knowing for certain. I am assuming your roof is low pitch. Be certain to choose a metal panel which is suitable for your low roof pitch.
