We are thinking about installing a steel roof over shingles. We have talked to a contractor about a steel roof and he insists that we need to have shingles removed so that steel roof will lay properly.
We figure that we could save a $1000 if we can leave the shingles on the roof and not have to dispose of them and have them removed. We also have two spots on the roof that if you step on them they are somewhat spongy under your weight.
What do you think? Do we need to remove old shingles? What about two spongy spots on
the roof?

We always recommend that you remove them to properly address any substrate issues and the science indicates that is provides for a more energy efficient installation as well.
How large is the roof?
