I have an old (150 yr) metal standing seam roof that is in poor shape and a roofer is recommending that I tar the entire surface. Is this a recommended practice? What are pros and cons?

Based on my past experience, putting tar on would be a very short term solution. I would either remove the existing and reroof with a new system or put down roof hugger and then a new roof system.

Same thing that happens to all VOC products. The volatilize over time and break down. Anything that is based in VOC's in not going to hold up the UV. This is the basis behind shingles have granules and membrane roofs being covered in stones. Sunblock via stone. Eric Novotny
