I am curious if metal can be used for green (planted) roofs, for example on a ranch house with low sloping hip roof. Assuming the structure can support the extra weight, I imagine it would be relatively easy to put a rigid lip or frame to hold the plants and dirt. Is that feasible and realistic? Ive seen pictures of such things in central Europe which have a more mild climate than here. Anders Benson

Sometimes a metal deck might be used but some sort of rubber or vinyl membrane would be used over it and beneath the vegetative roof. I would certainly suggest using construction methods that are proven in regards to this.
