I have spoken with several metal roofing contractors in my area. There seems to be two school of thought when installing metal roofing over an existing asphalt shingle roof. One says, install directly on the asphalt shingle; the other says, install furring strips on ashpalt shingles then install metal roofing on furring strips to allow for moisture to escape. Which is correct (or preferred)?

Some metal roofs can be installed on battens. Some can be installed on battens or decking. Some must be installed on decking.
This question is one of product design -- not one of general rule. Installing without battens will not cause a condensation problem.
The attic of any home should be vented according to code.
