How do I find out if a metal roofing material is OK for rainwater harvesting? What you don't want to happen is chemical leaching from the roofing material into the rain water. Or breakdown of the outer coating so that what is underneath leaches into the water.

I agree with rusty but also from a potential liability standpoint, I am not sure any metal roofing manufacturers support its use for drinking water. there is some research being done in this area though.

I go to the Renewable Roundup in Fredricksburg every year. There are always roof mfgs there selling their roofing materials with rainwater harvesting in mind. But I would like to shop around. If other metal roofing mfgs do not do the research and cannot support this usage they are missing out on a market and the mfgs that come to the roundup seem to have a monopoly. If you can't give me any assurances that I can safely use your product for rain water harvesting then I will have to look somewhere else.

Tim,
The MRA is a group of metal roofing manufacturers. Some of them have done research in this area, while others are working on it.
Metro Roof Products (www.metroroofs.com)
Has done this testing

I'm just using this company as an example. Many other metal roof products meet the World Health Organization’s toxicity limits, however most manufacturers have not done research in this area.

I am also looking for a paint finish for a metal roof that is safe for rainwater catchment. The only information I have found says not to use a finish with lead in it. Baked on enamel, galvanized and galvalume are recommended. Kynar 500 keeps coming up in my research but I can't find any actual documentation of testing safety for water catchment use. The information says it is a PVDF Fluorocarbon paint finish. Any information about Kaynar 500 use?

There will not be any lead in the paint itself. However, the pre-treatment of the metal could include chromium so that is why people are hesitant to suggest its use for drinking water. This is the case for any painted surface.
