many older homes in my area have standing seam or corrugated roofing which is periodically coated with a black bituminous coating similar to what is commonly applied to asphalt driveways. My question is whether it is possible to apply this type of coating to a brand new metal roof, and if so which metal would be the best candidate (terne, aluminum, etc)? I was told once that an old terne roof had to be completely covered with rust or else the tar would not stick properly, anyone know if there is any truth to that?

I really do not know. I do know that such coatings have limited life. I would try to address whatever is happening that is keeping the roof from performing as it should.
