We have had two contractors tell us that our old shingled roof need not be taken off before installing a metal roof, yet our city codes department tells us that the shingles must be removed. Their explanation is that over time, heat under the metal roof will cause the old shingles to buckle and thus, cause the metal roof to buckle, as well. Local codes require a perfectly flat roof. Has anyone reported having this problem after having their metal roof for a period of time? Is there any research or proof to disclaim this that we can provide to the Codes Department that would help get this ruling changed?
