I assume that by "coat" you are referring to something like an elastomeric coating.
If you just want to improve the looks, paint is fine.
If you're hoping to also correct any deterioration that may be on an old metal roofing, a coating may work better.

Yes you can coat the rusted metal roof with EPDM liquid rubber. However it is recommended that a corrosion inhibitive primer first be applied to areas where severe rusting has occurred. Liquid Rubber does not contain any corrosion inhibiting pigments but it is such an effective moisture barrier that it may be directly applied over light rust without a primer.
