I'm building a small cabin with no attic space. There will be only occasional use, wood stove, no indoor plumbing. The roof pitch is 12x12 (very steep). The ceiling with be tongue and groove pine nailed to the bottom of the rafters. My builder and I are considering two designs. I would like your input on which is best. Design #1: 2x10 rafters with 8" of foil backed insulation tacked to the rafter bottoms, leaving 2" of space above the insulation. OSB decking. Corrogated metal roof (9" repeat classic profile)screwed to the OSB deck. Soffit vents and a continuous ridge closure vent. Design #2: 2x8 rafters with 8" of foil backed insualtion tacked to the bottom of the rafters. 2x4 purlins on 2' centers. The metal roof (9" repeat classic pattern)screwed to the purlins. Thanks a million. Bill

Sorry for bad posting - design #2 would also have soffit vents and continuous ridge closure vents.

I would suggest Option #1 to provide better protection against condensation. Use underlayment on top of the OSB decking. Todd Miller
