we bought a house that has a metal roof... it has many screws with rubber gaskets that hold it down.
under the roof there is no plywood. it attaches to 1x4's that lay on top of the rafters...
is there anything wrong with this design?

It is a R-Panel. Most metal manufacturers make this panel. It is probably the most common panel made and it appears to have an improper lap on one panel.

It does apear that the laps (see the 6th rib starting from the RIGHT) then the sixth rib left of that were not lapped over, but instead were butted together.
Because they are smaller than the other ribs, it is POSSIBLE that this is the normal way this panel is installed, and that the panels have a double rib lap at the panel ends.
Because of the number of ribs per panel (7 it apears) I don't believe this is R-Panel, although I might be incorrect.
R-Panel has 4 ribs, 1-1/4" high spaced every 12" apart. It has a 3' width coverage area, although the panels are a little wider than that to acount for lapping.
Again this is partially speculation. Its hard to tell without being there.
I would get up there and see if they are indeed butted together, or whether the panels truly do lap. See the attached drawing as to how this could be.
Also I have attached a picture showing R-Panel dimensions, as well as the POSSIBLE (again I reiterate possible) double lapping profile.
