I interviewed several contractors recommended by the MRA here in Western Wisconsin (Hudson). Mostly stone coated metal installations for home, Metro or Gerard...contractors seem to be hard over one way or another, but some use batons, some don't. Some want a complete tear off, others don't. One says leave the existing box vents/soffits alone, others say go with ridge vent. OKKKKK. Nothing like absolute clarity among contractors.
Found a contractor I liked just as the snow was falling. Not the cheapest, but brought the Gerard rep out and spent a lot of time. Had a brutal winter, so no roofing time until snow cleared. This spring, the contractor no longer installs the product, so back to square one.
Roof is 15 yr asphalt one (second owner of house). Shingles starting to curl up, some severely...well known defective asphalt brand. No leaks anywhere that we can tell. Roof is cold in winter...snow stays on it. House is 2 story and upper story is warm in summer...about 10 degrees diff btw top and bottom.
Like the idea of the air space/baton system. Makes sense to me. However, "runner up" contractor wanted to screw Metro sheet product directly to roof on top of existing shingles.
Thoughts? Also I had a wired fan on previous home's roof that really helped with heat build up. I see solar systems now? Do they last long enough to cover the expense? No experience with those.
Any thoughts on the situation you can convey would be appreciated.

I do not know much about the solar fans. I am sorry. I would worry about their dependability personally.
As far as your roof decision ... some stone coated panels can be installed over battens -- nin fact, must be ... and some really cannot be. So, it depends upon exactly which panel they plan to install. Would the airspace be helpful? Yes. However, if your attic is already well vented to stay cold in winter, you will not get as much extra benefit from above shetahing ventilation (batten installation) as would someone in a southern climate with a big air conditioning load.

Thanks, Todd. They are installing Metro Roman Tile now, with battonless installation. They didn't put down new underlayment over the old asphalt (single layer) which has me concerned. Awaiting an answer back from the company.
