I have a new house with a metal roof and my insurance company refuses to insure my house because of the "nature of the roof and susceptibility to water damage". Is this common?

In Texas, they give discounts on metal roofs for their ability to withstand hail. Unless the insurance company is familiar with specifics on your roof, I would queston what draws them to this assumption. I would certainly shop around. Is there anything about your roof in terms of age or condition? Does it have multiple layers of roofing on it, etc?

That is not normal. Is there something unusual about the roof material or geometry?

I work for an insurance company and that is not the usual tact they take on metal roofing. There must be more than meets the eye here - i.e. brand of roofing material and/or installer (this particular insurance company may have a history of claims with certain companies, there may be a history of lawsuits against certain companies/manufacturers that will in their opinion and claims history affect insurability), the pitch of the roof, etc.
Shop around.
Unfortunately when an insurer has a history of claims, they can and will exclude coverage for that type of claim. Other insurers will not have the same claims history and you may likely have better luck. Check with your neighbours or others who have the same roofing and ask who they are insured by - that will give you a starting point for quotations.
