We are going to be putting a metal roof on our home, we've had 2 estimates, 1 said to lay directly on the shingles & the other said to put on 1x2" for air gap, which way is best

I am generally in favor of going over the existing deck with a new layer of underlayment. However, the best advice is to adhere to the instructions put forth by the manufacturer of the roofing.
