I Am building a garage, not heated. Can I attach the metal roofing directly to the rafters without any plywood or furring strips, the same idea as an old barn. The rafters are 2 ft apart. I would like to make the garage as cheap as possible but not waste money.

Unless you are planning to run the roof panels horizontally, which I would not recommend, you will need furring strips across the rafters to provide for panel attachment. Be sure to consult the panel manufacturer for the spacing of these furring strips for both dead load and wind uplift.
