Hi, I am looking to build new construction and I am looking for a roof material that is stylish yet sophisticated; a metal interlock roof that also has solar panels included. Is there any such thing? Help! thanks Silvarain1@comcast.net

Actually Todd, you are wrong - there are solar panel integrated into metal roof - Uni-Solar laminated self-adhering solar panels. They are designed for 16" standing seam metal roofs. What is great about them is the very quick install and no need for mounting hardware and through-roof penetration like with the regular solar panels. They are 16" wide by 18' long, which is 24 sq. ft. They are rated at 136 Watts. So in 1 sq. of roof area, you can have 544 watts of solar panels. I believe with a very easy installation - just peel-and stick right on the ground, and quick-connect terminals at the ridge line - this would be the most cost-efficient solar system on the market. Of course you need a standing seam roof for these solar panel which drives the cost up. Good Luck

Hi I am planning to install a 16" on center standing seam roof with 30 4'x5' solar panels mounted >6" from the roof to take advantage of the shade offered and keeping the panels cool. Question is how far apart to space the screws in the metal roof to handle the 100mph dynamic wind load we get here in SoCal? Look forward to your response Powell

Our installation of Interlock roofing with Unisolar 136 BIPV "peel and stick" modules is now producing power here in Washington State. We have a 3K system and, as Todd points out, though not technically or functionally "integrated" into the aluminum roofing, the panels look great because they sit unobtrusively between the standing seams. Our older system which I installed in 1980 never caught much mainstream attention since the panels were tilted above the roof - an aesthetic flaw to many visitors - allowing the panels to get closer to the ideal 90 degree angle to the sun's seasonal position.

I understand there are "spanish tile" looking metal roofing tiles. Can these also have the solar film or solar fusion installed on them?

I am doing the same thing: bright white standing seam roof, slicing up 6" square aluminum tubing to become individual standoffs. ken_crawley (at) bellsouth.net

16" spacing, stainless clips every 8", replaced 48 sheets of plywood. All of this was to improve my mounting plan for the solar panels. I wonder if I can claim part of the cost on my taxes as part of the PV system....?

There is no "integrated" metal roof and solar panel system but traditional PV panels can be mounted on pretty much any metal roof and there is also an option with standing seam of thin film PVs laminated to the metal.

You may wish to investigate United Solar or Dawn Solar for options.

I did recommend Uni-Solar in a subsequent post. Because it is an "aftermarket" or "add-on" product, I do not consider it to be "integrated" to the standing seam roof. I guess that is a matter of how one defines "integrated" though. Thanks so much for your post!

Thank you. I still do not consider thin films to be integrated to the roof system but that is just a matter of semantics. I am not denying their existence and value.

I contacted EnergyStar.gov regarding this. You can take the taxes as part of the material costs. **This also applies for metal roofing Energy Star tax credits, something I was not aware of.

For real. I knew about the Metal Roof tax credit, but had always thought the 30% was on the pre-tax amount. That was the surprise for me. When I called the official number on the EnergyStar.gov website and they confirmed that the 30% was on the total amount including taxes. (good news, but I wish I'd known about it 2 years ago, when the credit started) Now we're going to be busy letting people know they can count their taxes in figuring the credit.

Come on Nate...this is your Federal Tax dollars at work. You have to love the Federal Government propping up an industry (Solar Panels) that would have no chance without the 30% tax credit. Solar panels you get 30% back on the materials with no upper limit. Qualified roofing you will get 30% (up to $1,500) on the materials.
