It really depends a lot on pitch and the type of metal roof you have. I would always suggest asking this question to your roof manufacturer. There are options with scaffolding / walk boards that can be put on the roof. You should be tied off for safety. There are also some overshoes available under trade names like Korkers and Cougar Paws which may be helpful.
