Have talked to several contractors about replacing my shake roof with new metal tiles. One contractor suggested to put fiberglass insulation underneath the tiles after removing the old shakes. One suggested NOT to. What do the experts recommend? Is insulation needed for metal roofing? Thanks for your advice...

Generally I would not do this but there may be some peculiarities to your construction which make it a good idea. I don't know. Can you contact your roofing manufacturer, explain the situation fully to them, and ask for their opinion? That would be best all things considered. Todd Miller

Stan, You didn't say if your current roof (wood shakes) is over lathe or solid deck. If it is over lathe, the roofer may look at it like a metal roof over open purlins. Usually we put vinyl faced fiberglass on over open purlins for condensation and noise purposes. Solid deck is the best way to go, and if you already have a solid deck or your going to deck over the lathe, I wouldn't put insulation under the metal tile. Wade
