We live in a 18 year old modular home and have problems with ice dams. The roof is 7 years old and we have a few places that are stained due to ice dams. The roof pitch is 12/3 and the ceilings are cathedral. Will a standing seam roof installed over the existing shingles help the prevention of Ice Dams or the damage that they cause.
Thanks, Phil

It will tend to shed snow more quickly ... and something like a mechanically seamed standing seam could be excellent at resisting damage from ice damming. The key to avoiding ice dams, though, is ventilation.
