We will be building a new home in Covington, Louisiana this year ... hot & humid summers, mild winters. We are going with a metal roof for a number of reasons, including energy efficiency. I have been researching painted vs non-painted metal roofs, and am very confused. Throw in names like "galvalume", and I get even more confused. From what I've read, non-painted metal roofs have good reflective properties, but poor emissivity properties. Painted roofs with certain colors have both good reflective and emissivity properties. So, painted roofs with the appropriate color are more energy efficient than non-painted metal roofs. On the other hand, I've read and have been told that painted roofs can be a maintenance problem from the paint pealing, chipping, fading, etc. From what I've read, factory-applied coatings are more durable and long-lasting than field-applied coatings. And, where do galvalume and other such treatments fit?
I thought you might be able to set me straight. Can you provide some simple comparative information on which is the best way to go and what to look for in metal roof specifications? If we go with a painted roof, we'd like a color close to the un-painted galvanized metal. Is there such a color that provides better emissivity properties than non-painted?
Thanks.
