I am installing a 29ga. standing seam roof. I am stripping the old roof. I believe the deck is 1/2 or 5/8 OSB. They say you can screw the roof into solid decking. Is this considered "solid decking"?? Should I lay purlin strips on top and screw into the purlins? Does the felt paper go under or over the purlins? Thanks.

This depends on the climate you are in and wind uplift requirements.purlins are better as they give you solid screwing attachment and the air space will stop heat transfer. Check with the manufacturer to see if the metal can go on strapping.
If you only use felt peper put it down first over the decking. Make sure to use vented eave and ridge closure.

Dear Al,
I have boarded my little barn roof( 10/12 pitch) with 1" rough cut lumber overlaid with 30 lb. felt. The felt is tacked down with staples and my question is to the wearing on the metal roof of these staples as the panels move with the changing temps. Will they wear off the finish causing hundreds of spots for rust to begin and ruin my roof? Can this be privented other than using my caulking gun filled with silicone, to spot every staple. Heaven forbid. Thanks, [email protected]

It should generally not be an issue especially if the sheet length is short as the thermal contraction is minimal. There are other factors to consider as well such as interior temperature, ventilation aznd the colour of the metal as certainly the darker colours absorb more heat and move more.
