How important is metal thickness in standing seam roofing? If vertical creases are pressed into the metal sheets, are these an effective substitute for thickness? Is 29 gauge too thin for standing seam?

The vertical creases can help to minimize the appearance of "oil canning" or waviness in the flat areas of the roofing panels. Obviously, there is a cost consideration with thinner metal. Most standing seam manufacturers will have a load table which explains the fastening patterns which must be used on their different products. With thinner metal, you will typically need more fasteners in order to meet various uplift requirements. Also, certainly, there is ultimately something to be said concerning extended life coming from thicker metal. Ultimately, there are also other factors to consider including the quality of paint finish on the product and the experience / quality level of the installing contractor. Todd Miller
