I have a Georgian home built in 1898 with a asphalt shingle roof one layer, no leaks thus far, however, shingles are showing some age (existing roof over 8 yrs old). I've called several contractors and, of course, everyone claims that their product is superior to the competition. Several homes in my neighborhood have gone the metal way. I've seen a slate aluminum product which I like. What do you recommend aluminum or metal and more important what are the different elements I need to include in the contract. Thanks

Aluminum and steel both have advantages and disdvantages. Aluminum has rust resistance. Steel has greater strength sometimes.
You need to also consider the finish on the product as well as the ability and experience of the installer.
Revvew the job carefully with your contractor to make sure that all is spelled out very clearly.
