I currently have a shingle with severe leaks and am looking to replace it. My dilemma is choosing between metal and shingle. Weather changes on a dime here...snow one week and thunderstorms the next. Wind and hail are also a concern. I also have pine trees that drop an abundance of needles on the roof. I got an estimate and the roofer recommend dimensional shingles as well as replacing some rotted wood. But several people tell me metal is better. Considering all this, I want to know which is the most durable and the best value for these conditions. What are the advantages and disadvantages of each? Any info would be appreciated.

pay me now or pay me later. Certainly metal provides a lifetime solution. As in many products there are various degrees of quality and duradility in the finish and substrate that can effect the price but certainly metal has better payback and is available in Energy Star colours which qualifies you for tax credits and will save on utility bills from here on.
