We are looking to replace our roof on our cabin, which currently has shingles. We want to put a metal roof on. I would prefer a tin type look, which will weather. Other family member says a tin roof will need painting occasionally, which we really don't want. The other person wants a colored metal roof. Can we have the weathered tin roof that is low maintenance? What product do you recommend? We are hoping this to last 30 years or so.

Wow that really didn't answer her questions. I have seen what looks like tin used without paint or galvanizing and understand that you can spray it with mecuric acid to get an instant rust. But how long will it last? Who provides untreated tin?

Todd knows the following, but his hands are kinda tied. He is a manufacturer and this website is supported by many manufacturers. Me, I'm just a roofer. The panels Ms. Norman is refering to are called galvlaume. Even the painted panels (except aluminum) start out as galvalume. Galvalume doesn't have to be painted. That is the consumer's choice. Galvalume has a better anti-corrosion properties than galvanized steel. I don't know of any untreated tin. Tin is used to coat other metals and in a pure form changes characteristics in cold weather.
