We have an historical structure which retains it's original wood shake roof along with 2 additional shingled roofs. We want to replace and considering metal but what type? Also do we take off all roofs? If so, then what about installing metal. Does this go over the wide pine boards used for the original wood shingles? HELP? [email protected]

From a practical standpoint, some metal roofs could be installed over the existing though I realize that could be a “hard sell” with many of those who are involved with this project. However, the low weight and other design attributes of metal encourage installation over existing layers of roofing.
If the existing is removed, some metal roofs would require decking and some could be installed over the existing spaced boards.
Ultimately, metal will offer you greater life, durability and aesthetics. Proper installation of metal is critical though.
