I have a very large barn that is getting a new metal roof. the new roof is in hand made steel sheets that are 39" wide, 13' long and have 5 "ribs" the length of the sheet. The roofer who has 30 years of experience is placing the neoprene headed screws on the flat areas and not on the ribs as I have seen on every other metal roof, and for that matter in instruction books for installation of metal roofs.
1. is there a hard and fast rule on where to put screws or does the placement matter less now that screws have the neoprene head?
2. since the overlap between sheets is still just on the rib, should I be concerned about water blowing into those seams since they are not being held tightly together?
3. how much of a stickler should I be on the perpendicular orientation at which the contractor is driving the screw into the metal. there are currently many of the screws that went in at a less than perpendicular angle and as a result appear as though the neoprene washer is not seating up to the metal perfectly.
Thanks, love the site and all the advice. look forward to your comments

It is an issue if the neoprene washers are not sealing well. The screws should be driven straight.
Most manufacturers want the screws in the top of the ribs preferably or in the flats of the panels.
I would contact the roofing manufacturer and get their input on this. Also ask for a warranty registration.

Thanks for the imput. I will have them drive new screws where the crooked screws are now. Warranty registration is supposed to be dropped off tomorrow, but also good advice to stay on top of that.
Much appreciated!
