I have just found a leak on my 5 rib metal roof. When installed the screws were placed in the flats. The screws were self tapping so the contractor let the screws drill themselves into the metal and wood. When I isolated the leak and removed the leaking screw I found what might become a problem on other screws. A chip of the metal that the screw had drilled was between the rubber washer and the roof panel. It must have cut the rubber as it screwed down and after expansion and contraction it started leaking. Should these screw holes been pre-drilled so the chips wouldn't have become imbedded in the washer? Should the screws be in the ribs instead of the flats? Does the expansion and contraction loosed the screws and or washers enough to leak?

All questions best asked of the manufacturer. Location depends on profile, roof configuration. Pre drilling is best on roofing as it will elliminate the problem you experienced. Certaily the longer the sheet lengths the more the thermal movement. Provided the sheets are not over 25 ft, the expansion should not loosen the screws but could wear on the washers if they are overtightened.
