I had the following questions for a re-roofing job in Vermont where an old corrugated roof on an 1800's house (with plank boards) is being replaced with metal sheet roofing.
1) Is an underlayment required between the metal and the planks?
2) How do you determine if strapping should be done or if it is better to just attach the roof to the old plank roof?
thanks, Steve

The first point of contact should be the manufacturere of the metal and second point is their product approval which will dictate how to install it. Having sid that, the building code calls for underlayment and it helps stop telegraphing of the boards up through the sheets when laid direct. If you have a vaulted ceiling, then you are to supply 1" minimum of vertical free vented air space which means strapping vertically first then horizontally to accept the roofing. This method will help reduce heat transfer and save energy.
