I am putting a new ribbed metal roof on a small unheated cabin I own in NC. The builder used 1 x 6s for the ceiling (bottom side of the 1 x 6) and roof (top side of the 1 x 6). He then placed asphalt shingles over the 1 x 6s.
I was going to tear off the old roof. I was then going to roll out thirty pound felt before laying the new metal roof. As the cabin will only be heated when I am there (woodstove), will I have much of a condensation problem with the installation I described. I had not planned on using insulation.
Thanks!

Well heat will escape and condensate on the underside of the metal however the old shingles can act as an underlayment. I would consider strapping the roof vertically first and then ventilate the air chamber which complies with code.

Allan,
The cabin is over fifty years old and I am doing all the "fix-up" work myself. I need to preface the questions by saying I am not a contractor. The asphalt shingles are in such a deteriorated state, they need to be removed.
Once removed, will the addition of the thirty pound felt paper help minimize the condensation on the underside of the metal roof?
Also, when you use the term "strapping the roof vertically" are you referencing the direction of the thirty pound felt underlayment? If so, should I also run the courses horizontally as well and which should be on the bottom?
Thanks,
Joe

You need to install vertical lumber strips at least 1" thick over the deck and then install the horizontal lumber to support your roof system. Yes installing the felt over the decking will deal with any condensation and allow it to run to the eave. The felt runs horizontally and should be lapped 2" to 4".
