I have an a-frame home in Northern Michigan and am getting ready to re-roof. The existing roof consists of 2x6 T&G, tar paper, 1/2" of insulation board, and two course of shingles--no vents. No condensation problems currently. My approach: tear off two course of shingles, install another 1/2" of insulation board, install another layer of felt, install roof directly on roof. Is this a sound approach? Should I leave the shingles on, install perlins, and then roof?

Upgrading the insulation is always a good idea and you have the felt in the right spot but the building code calls for a 1" minimum vented air space. Choose a system that can set up on strapping and strap the roof vertical over the rafeters. You will pay this back in energy savings and comfort quickly
